Question: What kinds of disciplinary actions can be taken against me if I am TEMSed for being intoxicated? Is there a difference if I am underage and who in the University deals with this?
Answer: The Medical Amnesty Policy covers many of these issues- we have attached it below for you to read. As far as Tulane EMS, if you are underage, you will be transported to a hospital due to the fact that you are not 18. The law states that those under 18 cannot refuse care- only the parent or guardian can, unless the patient is legally emancipated, or there is a waiver signing over medical decisions to a third party (coach, teacher, etc.). We take no interest in the fact that you are underage, may have consumed alcohol, or even taken drugs. Our first, highest, and only priority is for you to receive any medical attention necessary. When dealing with Tulane EMS, please always be honest in regard to alcohol or drugs you may have taken- there are serious side effects and interactions that we need to know about.
There is no disciplinary action taken for being transported to the hospital. Students may have to undergo a meeting with a clinician at the Student Health Center, but this is not a disciplinary action and is not included in any disciplinary records. Several departments on campus deal with this issue- the Office of Student Conduct, Housing and Residence Life, and the Student Health Center. The information they receive does not come from Tulane EMS. Any information received by any other department comes from a police report written by an officer on scene or incident report filed by a staff member of Housing and Residence Life. No information on the health status of the individual is provided if it is considered protected health information. Specific information about the policies and procedures of the Office of Student Conduct, Housing and Residence Life or the Student Health Center is available on their websites or by contacting their offices.
